Research indicates that in recent years problem behaviors at school have increased significantly since pre-pandemic levels. Many students still appear to be developmentally behind in socialization, self-regulation and other executive functioning skills, often resulting in misbehavior. Now more than ever teachers need effective tools to address these changing needs of their students, rather than relying on "traditional" classroom management and discipline practices. In this session participants will explore applications of evidence-based positive behavior support techniques that work in any class, including maximizing class structure by establishing clear expectations, routines and procedures; providing more acknowledgements for appropriate than inappropriate behavior; and establishing a continuum of consistent responses for misbehavior.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), when implemented across classrooms as part of a schoolwide framework, creates meaningful opportunities for students to share their perspectives, develop trusting relationships, and strengthen their skills through direct instruction and practice. Research on evidence-based SEL practices demonstrates that integrating SEL into school environments can enhance student behavior, boost academic achievement, increase graduation rates, and support long-term mental wellness. In this training, participants will examine strategies for fostering a positive and supportive classroom environment, discover ways to embed social and emotional skill development into academic learning, and reflect on culturally responsive approaches to supporting students’ social and emotional growth.

At various times students with disabilities may require adult support to access instruction, resulting in assignment of paraprofessionals. Research has shown paraprofessionals often assume too much responsibility for the student, become overprotective, inadvertently interfere with the student’s social interactions, and are sometimes viewed by parents and educators as the student’s primary teacher. Therefore, it is important to view use of a paraprofessional as a temporary measure, with plans established to fade support as much and as soon as possible to encourage independence. During this session participants will explore strategies for delivering appropriate and least intrusive levels of academic and behavioral support to students as well as key elements to include in a plan for fading the use of additional adult support.

When students struggle to begin, sustain, or complete tasks, it is often attributed to a lack of effort or motivation. However, these challenges are frequently rooted in executive function demands that exceed a student’s capacity in the moment. This session challenges common assumptions and reframes executive function as a shared instructional responsibility. Participants will explore how to proactively design classroom environments that reduce overwhelm and support all learners through whole-class strategies. Focusing on task initiation, task completion, self-monitoring, planning and organizing, and working memory, this session provides practical tools to make expectations visible, structure thinking, and support independence.
